Hong Kong is often touted as a city ahead of its time, with its towering skyscrapers, efficient transport system, and bustling economy. But when it comes to internet access, the city is divided into the haves and have-nots. While some enjoy lightning-fast broadband speeds, others are left in the digital dark ages, struggling to connect to even the most basic websites.

For those lucky enough to live in areas with strong broadband infrastructure, the internet is a breeze. Downloading movies, streaming music, and video conferencing with colleagues overseas are all done without a hitch. But for others, the experience is vastly different. This divide is also evident in the cost of internet access. While some pay top dollar for the fastest speeds, others are forced to settle for slower, cheaper plans that barely meet their needs. This digital divide not only affects individuals, but also businesses, with those without strong internet access struggling to keep up with the competition.

Hong Kong’s internet disparity: Living in the digital dark ages

Despite being a city known for its technological advancements, Hong Kong’s internet disparity is a cause for concern. In some areas, the infrastructure is simply not there, leaving residents struggling to access even the most basic websites. In 2020, they launched the $6 billion "Connectivity for All" scheme, which aims to provide high-speed internet access to all households in the city by 2025. While this is a step in the right direction, there is still a long way to go in bridging the digital divide that exists in the city.

In a city where technology plays such a large role, it’s important that everyone has equal access to the internet. While the government’s efforts to address this issue are commendable, there is still much work to be done. Only when everyone has equal access to high-speed internet can we truly say that Hong Kong is a city ahead of its time.
